Control work

Textbook: p. 124
GoalChecks what has been learnt in lessons 27–33 of Chapter III (information security, protection methods, networks, cryptography, e-government, e-mail, viruses) in control tasks and assesses the student's own safe habits.

Explanation

This control work covers Chapter III. The theory questions are about the three properties of information security, identification–authentication–authorization, the groups of protection means, kinds of network and protocols, symmetric and asymmetric encryption, the electronic signature, the directions of e-government (G2G, G2C, G2B, G2F), the structure of e-mail and the kinds of malware. The practical task is a “Personal security plan”: write an 8-point plan for your own devices and accounts (screen lock, passwords, two-step verification, updates, backup, antivirus, trusted sources, privacy settings). The calculations include the number of password variants, the size of a 3-2-1 backup, file transfer time (size·8 : speed), base64 size (·4/3), small RSA (n = p·q, φ = (p–1)(q–1)) and doubling (2ⁿ). To prepare, repeat the “safety” rules of each lesson, practise spotting a fake address and a phishing message, do the calculations by hand and honestly assess your own safe habits. Note: do not write a real password or personal data in the tasks.

Worked examples
Sample calculations: an 8-digit numeric code has 10⁸ = 100000000 variants; a 500 MB file at 200 Mbit/s takes 500·8 : 200 = 20 seconds; a 21 MB file is 21·4/3 = 28 MB in base64; with p = 5 and q = 7, n = 35 and φ = 4·6 = 24.
A sample practical task: a “Personal security plan” table – 8 points, each with columns for “current state”, “risk” and “action”; set a deadline for at least 3 points. Do not write real passwords in the table.
Class activity

“Security quiz”: the class splits into two teams; each team prepares 5 questions from Chapter III for the other (2 theory, 2 calculation, 1 situation: “Is this message safe?”). 1 point for a correct answer, and 1 more point in the situation question for giving the reason.

Practice
1
How many variants does a 6-digit numeric code have?
2
How many seconds does it take to transfer a 750 MB file at 150 Mbit/s?
3
For p = 5 and q = 7 find n and φ for RSA. Write φ.
4
Assess this situation: a message “from the bank”: “The account will be closed in 24 hours, confirm your password at this link”. What do you do?
