From collecting to information: five stages
ICT Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 4: pp. 35–39
GoalPut the five stages from data to information in order and clean a small table.
New words
data cleaning · removing mistakes, repeats and wrong values from datastore · keeping data on computers, in big databases, so we can use it lateranalyse · using AI and machine learning to find patterns in datainformation · a result drawn from data that helps us decide
Explanation
Raw data is not yet useful. It goes through five stages. First, collect: sensors, forms and devices gather the data. Second, store: the data is kept in big databases, on computers that keep data for us, in a server room or in the cloud. Third, clean: mistakes, repeats and wrong values are removed. Fourth, analyse: AI and machine learning search for patterns. Fifth, extract information: the result is a clear fact that helps a decision, for example that more cars arrive on Sundays. Cleaning matters a lot. If the table says that 210 cars came on Wednesday by mistake, the analysis will be wrong. Remember Week 5: veracity is about correct, reliable data.

A school counts the cars at its gate every day for a week and writes the numbers in a table. A teacher spots a repeat row and a number that is ten times too big. Both are removed before the table is analysed.
collect votes→keep the paper→remove the double vote→count→announce the favourite
A club has the same three stages in a small way: the members collect votes on paper, a student keeps the paper in a folder (store), and the group removes a vote that was written twice (clean) before counting (analyse) and announcing the favourite activity (information).
Class activity
Look at the cars table. Cross out the repeated row and circle the wrong value. Write what the table should say if Wednesday’s value was really 21. Then write the five stages in order and one example for each.
