Explanation

This week we plan a small project of two web pages for an invented school science club called Robots Club (example). The pages are “About the club” and “Club events”. We never use a real address, phone number, e-mail or photo of anybody: everything is made up. A project starts with a plan on paper. Make one folder for the project, and in it three files. The first page is a file that ends in .html. The second page is another .html file. The third file ends in .css and holds the looks for both pages, as you learned last week. File names are short, in small letters and without spaces. The plan on paper comes first; if your teacher allows it, you can try it later on a school computer.

Worked examples

Nour draws the folder on paper as a box called robots-club. Inside the box she writes the three file names with a small note for each. Her teacher checks: no spaces and the right endings.

Karim wants to name a file “club events page.html”. His friend says the name has spaces, so it is better to write events.html. Short names in small letters are easy for the browser and for people.
Class activity

Draw the project folder with its three files on paper. Next to each file, write what it is for in one short sentence. Write a name for a third page you might add later, using the rules for file names.

Practice
1
How many files are in the project folder and what are they?
2
Which file holds the looks of both pages?
3
What does the ending .html tell us?
4
Why do we avoid spaces in file names?
