What is user experience?

ICT Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 2, Lesson 1: pp. 42–46
GoalExplain what user experience is and tell a good day from a bad day with an app.
New words
user experience (UX) · how a person finds and feels the use of a website or an appapp · a program made for a particular job, often on a phone or tabletwebsite · a set of linked pages that you open in a browserfrustration · the annoyed, tired feeling when something is too hard
Explanation

Websites and apps can be easy or hard to use. User experience, or UX, is the whole story of how a person uses a digital product: can I find what I need, do I feel good, will I come back? A library is a good comparison. In a well-ordered library the books are in order and signs show the way, so you find a book quickly. In a library where the books are thrown anywhere, you get tired and leave. A good UX is like the first library, a poor UX like the second. Note that UX is not how pretty something looks; that is the topic of next week. UX is about how easy and pleasant the use is. Think of an app or a site you use at home or at school and ask yourself how it feels.

Worked examples
Mina uses an invented school library app. On a bad day she has to open four menus to find the list of new books, and the page jumps while she reads. On a good day the list is on the first screen, and she finds her book in a minute.

Karim says the app looks beautiful, so the experience must be good. His teacher says: a pretty library can still hide the books. UX asks how easy and pleasant the use is, not only how it looks.
Class activity

Think of an app or a website you use at home or at school. Write one sentence for a good day and one for a bad day with it. Underline the words that tell how you felt. Do not write the name of any real app.

Practice
1
What does UX stand for in your own words?
2
Which library is a picture of good UX: books in order or books thrown anywhere?
3
Is UX only about how pretty a page looks?
4
Name two signs of a bad user experience.
