What makes a threat advanced?
ICT Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 2: pp. 22–23
GoalExplain what makes a cyber threat advanced and why it is more than a simple virus.
New words
advanced cyber threat · a carefully planned attack that uses a weak point in a system, a device or people’s behaviourmalware · harmful software made to damage, spy on or take control of a deviceweak point (vulnerability) · a flaw or a careless habit that an attacker can useattacker · a person who breaks into systems or tricks people to do harm
Explanation
In earlier years you learned to choose good passwords and to keep antivirus programs up to date. Now we study a more serious kind of danger. A simple virus may spread without any plan. An advanced cyber threat is planned. Think of a thief who does not just kick the front door. He watches the house to learn when the family leaves, tries the back window, or pretends to be a repairman. Online, an attacker also looks for a weak point. The weak point may be a flaw in a system, an old device that was never updated, or a person’s habit, such as clicking quickly. This is why we say that an attacker may attack machines, but may also attack people. The word hacker is used for such a person, but we do not admire him: he breaks in to do harm.
Simple virus
Advanced threat
Plan
spreads without a plan
carefully planned
Target
any device it reaches
a chosen system, device or person
What it uses
a flaw that is easy to find
a specific weak point, even a habit
Example in the house story
a stone thrown at a window
watching, then the back window
Worked examples
Laila’s class has an old tablet that nobody has updated for a long time. Everybody forgot about it. A planned attack could use it as the weak point, because old software has known flaws. Updating is like locking the back window.
watch→find a weak point→attack→(we update, check and tell an adult)
Karim says every cyber danger is just a virus. His sister explains that some dangers are planned and aim at people’s habits, as when someone watches a house before trying the window. Planning is what makes a threat advanced.
Class activity
Write the house story with a digital twin: a line that says the thief watches, a line for the weak window, and a line for the pretend repairman. Then write the online version of each line next to it. Compare with a classmate.
Practice
1
What word describes an attack that is carefully planned and uses a weak point?
An advanced cyber threat.
2
Give two kinds of weak points.
For example a flaw in a system, an old device not updated, or a careless habit.
3
In the house story, what does the thief who watches the house represent?
