Smart systems around us
You already use connected smart systems, often without noticing. In a smart home, IoT links the lights and the cooling to a phone, AI notices that the room is hot or that someone usually comes home at two, and a robot, such as a cleaner, can do a floor job. A school robot is linked to learning material, its AI understands a question, and the robot speaks or writes the answer. On a smart farm, soil sensors send data, AI judges whether the soil needs water, and a machine waters the plants. A voice assistant sends your spoken request over the internet and AI understands it, but it has no robot part because it does not move. A smart car is linked to maps, its AI watches the road, and the machine part brakes or steers; if a sensor sees an obstacle ahead, the car brakes.
| System | IoT part | AI part | Robot part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart home | links lights and cooling to a phone | sees the room is hot and decides | a cleaning robot on the floor |
| School robot | links the robot to learning material | understands a question | speaks or writes the answer |
| Smart farm | soil sensors send data | decides if the soil needs water | a machine waters the plants |
| Voice assistant | sends the spoken request | understands the words | none: it does not move |
| Smart car | links the car to maps | watches the road | brakes or steers |
Choose one of the five systems and draw it as a table with three boxes: IoT, AI, robot. Fill each box with one sentence. If your system has no robot part, write “none” and say why. Compare your table with a classmate’s.
