Folders, sub-folders and file names

Explanation
Think of a school cupboard. It has shelves, and on the shelves are paper folders, and inside a folder are papers. A computer keeps files the same way. A folder is like a paper folder. A sub-folder is a smaller folder inside it, like a labelled sleeve for one subject. A good order is a main folder called ‘School’, sub-folders for ‘Maths’, ‘Science’ and ‘Arabic’, and inside Science a sub-folder ‘Plants’. Each file needs a clear name. ‘Plants_report_draft1’ tells you what it is, but ‘new file 7’ tells you nothing. Put documents, pictures and videos in the right places. Do not leave everything on the desktop: it gets crowded like a floor covered with papers.
Worked examples
Mariam saves a photo of a leaf in Science > Photos, with the name ‘leaf_photo_front’. Next week she finds it in a few seconds.
Karim has 60 files on his desktop, all called ‘new’ and ‘new2’. He cannot find his maths homework. His teacher helps him make folders and rename the files.
Hana names her files with the subject, the topic and the date: ‘Maths_fractions_Oct’. Because the names are clear, she does not have to open each file to know what is inside.
Class activity
Cupboard to folders. Draw a school cupboard with three shelves for Maths, Science and Arabic. On each shelf draw two paper folders and name them. Copy it as a folder tree with boxes and lines: main folder, sub-folders, files. Write good names for two files and a bad name for one, and say why it is bad.
