Research an Egyptian celebration
ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 34–37
GoalPlan research on an Egyptian celebration and make an advice poster on using sources.
New words
celebration · a special day or event that people mark togethertopic · the subject you choose to researchresearch question · what you want to find out about your topicposter · a large picture with short words that gives advice or news
Explanation
Egypt has many celebrations, such as Sham el-Nessim in spring, the Nile festival, Ramadan lanterns or a harvest day in a village. Choose one that interests you and plan to research it. Write your topic. Then write what you want to find out, for example ‘How do families celebrate Sham el-Nessim, and since when?’ Decide which source helps with which job: an online library for facts, a museum visit on screen for old objects, a map for the places, key words in a search engine for more pages. Use them with a grown-up. At the end, make an advice poster that tells other pupils when and how to use each source, and think about what went well and what you would do differently.
Choose a topic→Write what to find out→Match sources to jobs→Make a poster and reflect
Worked examples
Hana chooses the topic ‘Ramadan lanterns’. Her question is ‘How are lanterns made and why do children carry them?’ She writes both on her plan.
Karim matches sources to jobs: online library for how lanterns are made, online museum for old lanterns, a map for where they are sold in old Cairo. He will use all three with his teacher.
Their advice poster says: ‘Need a checked fact? Use an online library. Need a place? Check the map with a teacher. Need pictures? Check if they are free to use.’ After presenting, they reflect: ‘Next time we will start earlier.’
Class activity
Plan on paper. Choose an Egyptian celebration. Write: (1) your topic, (2) your research question, (3) a table of jobs and sources (at least four rows), (4) three key words you will type. Then design an advice poster with a title and three short tips about when to use each source. Draw only your own pictures. At the end write two sentences of reflection: what went well, and what you would do differently next time.
Practice
1
Write one research question about a celebration.
Answers differ, for example: ‘How do families celebrate Sham el-Nessim?’
2
Which source would you use to see old objects for your topic?
An online museum.
3
What goes on an advice poster about sources?
A title and short tips on when and how to use each source.
4
Why do we reflect at the end of research?
To learn what went well and what to do differently next time.
