Plan my own home page

ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 22–29
GoalPlan the home page of my own information website on paper.
New words
template · a ready-made layout, or a blank one, to start a website fromhome page · the first page a visitor sees on a websitetheme · the main idea or look that the whole website followslayout · where the pictures, words and menus are placed on a page
Explanation

Making a website starts with planning. A website-making program offers templates. A template can be blank, or ready-made with a layout that you can change. Then you write a site title and a tagline. Next you design the home page. It is the first screen a visitor sees, so it must look appealing and make the theme clear. You add menus so people can move around, and a Contact page and an About page. You also think of photos and videos that fit the topic, and a font that is large and easy to read. You do not need a computer to plan: you can draw the whole home page on paper first.

Worked examples
Nile Wingstagline
Seif chooses the theme ‘Birds of the Nile’. His title is ‘Nile Wings’ and his tagline is ‘Meet the birds of our river’. Title and tagline together tell visitors the topic at once.
big photomenu3 small
Jana’s home page has a big photo of a heron, a menu on the top and three small pictures under it. The big picture shows the theme. The menu helps visitors move around.
hard to readlarge and simple
Youssef writes the text of his site in a small, thin, pale font. Visitors cannot read it. He changes it to a large, simple, dark font. Easy reading is part of a good design.
Class activity

Plan your home page on paper. Choose a topic you love (for example football, pyramids or desert plants). Write the site title and a tagline. Draw the home page: where does the big picture go? Where is the menu? Add a Contact and an About page to the menu. Then ask a partner these questions: Do you understand the topic in five seconds? Can you read everything? What would you change?
