A helpful post: calm and clear

ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 14–17
GoalTell a calm, clear post from an angry one and write a helpful post for a cause.
New words
opinion · what you think or feel about somethingpost · a message you put online for others to readfalse information · things that are not true but are shared as if they werecause · a goal that people care about and work for together
Explanation

You may share your opinion online, in the same kind way you would say it face to face. A helpful post is calm, clear and useful. It tells what the problem is, gives a true fact, and asks for one thing to do. An angry post shouts, blames people and says things like ‘if you do not care, you are bad’. It does not help, and it can hurt. Before you share anything, check that it is right and easy to understand. Never pass on false information. If a website keeps sharing false or harmful things, stop visiting it. Always think: would I say this to this person’s face?

Post A: ‘The water tap in our yard drips all day. Please help us close it well. Thank you!’ It is calm, true and asks for one thing.

Post B: ‘Nobody cares about water! You are all lazy!’ It blames everybody, gives no fact and asks for nothing. People will not want to help.

Seif hears that ‘a famous bridge will close for a year’. He is not sure it is true, so he asks his teacher before sharing. He does not pass on a rumour.
Class activity

Write your own post on paper for an invented cause, for example ‘plant three trees in our school garden’. Use three lines: the problem with one true fact, why it matters, and one action people can do. Keep your tone calm. Then read it aloud to a partner, who answers three questions: Is it calm? Is it true? Is it clear? If an answer is no, rewrite that line.

Practice

Name three things a helpful post has.
2
Why is a post that blames and shouts not helpful?

4
What should you do about a website that keeps sharing harmful information?
