Phishing and smishing: spot the signs

ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 54–57
GoalSpot the signs of phishing and smishing messages and know what to do.
New words
phishing · a message that looks real but is a trick to get your detailssmishing · phishing by text messagesuspicious · looking wrong so that you should be carefulsender · the person or company a message comes from
Explanation

Imagine a stranger in a uniform knocking at your door, saying, ‘You won a prize! Give me your key and your mother’s bank number quickly!’ You would not give them. A phishing message does the same on a screen. It looks real but is a trick. When it comes by text message, it is called smishing. Signs: a surprise prize, a hurry (‘in one hour!’), a request for private details, spelling mistakes, a sender you do not know. What to do: do not click anything, do not answer, do not call a number in it, and show a grown-up. Nobody is in trouble for getting such a message. Today we practise on an invented message on paper.

Habiba’s cousin says, ‘I clicked a link by mistake.’ Habiba says, ‘Stay calm. Tell a grown-up. You are not in trouble.’
Class activity

Message detective. Read the pretend message in the table. Draw a circle around every sign of phishing, and count them. Then write your own pretend phishing message with at least three signs. Swap with a partner, who must circle the signs. Finish by writing the three things you do when you get a suspicious message.
