Bees that dance to give directions

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 1, Unit 1, pp. 84–99
GoalExplain how honeybees use movement to give directions, and how a bat-inspired cane helps people.
New words
honeybee · a bee that lives in a hive and makes honeyhive · the home of a colony of beesinspired · having an idea that comes from nature
Explanation

A honeybee that finds flowers flies back to the hive. Inside, in the dark, it does a special dance on the comb. Other bees follow the dancer closely and feel the dance. The dance tells them the direction of the flowers and how far away they are. The bees then fly out and find the flowers, without having seen them. The dance is a signal made of movement. We cannot give the exact rule here, so we will play a classroom code game: walking toward the window means the flowers are toward the window; a short walk means near and a long walk means far. Nature also gives ideas to engineers. Because bats use echoes, engineers made a cane for people who cannot see. It sends out sound, listens for the echoes from things in the way, and makes the handle vibrate under the user’s thumb to warn of an obstacle.

Worked examples
dancesfollowsflowers
A bee comes back to the hive and dances. Another bee follows and then flies out to the flowers. Information passed from one bee to another with movement.
Classroom bee code. Jana walks a long way toward the door. Her classmates decide: the flowers are far, in the direction of the door. Then they must show how they would find them.
obstacleechovibration
A bat-inspired cane sends sound ahead. When there is a chair in the way, the echo comes back and the handle vibrates. The user feels the warning with the thumb.
Class activity

Bee code game. Choose a flower spot in your classroom (the window, a shelf, the door). One child is the bee: they walk toward it, and the walk length shows near or far. The other bees watch and say where the flowers are. Play three times with different spots. Talk about it: which message was easy to read? What would help?

Practice
1
What does a honeybee’s dance tell other bees?
2
Is the bee’s dance a light, sound or movement signal?
3
How does the bat-inspired cane warn its user?
4
Which animal gave engineers the idea for the cane?
