What is a canyon?

Discovery Education Science P4: Term 2, Unit 4, pp. 122–134
GoalDescribe the features of a canyon, tell it from a valley, and use clues to say how a gully formed.
New words
canyon · a deep landform with steep walls, often with a river at the bottomvalley · low land between hills or mountains, with gently sloping sidesgully · a small, narrow channel cut in the ground by running water
Explanation

A canyon is a landform that is deep, narrow and steep-sided. Its walls often show bands of rock, and a river or stream usually runs along the bottom. The Coloured Canyon in Sinai has walls striped with different colours. Far away in Oman, Wadi Nakhr is another canyon. A canyon forms when running water erodes rock for a very long time, even millions of years. A valley is also a low place cut by a river or ice, but its sides are gentle and wide. To work out how a landform formed, scientists look at clues. A small gully with plants along it and gently worn sides was probably made by a stream. If the gully is deeper after heavy rain, we can predict that heavy rain running over bare, sloping ground will cut more gullies. Understanding how landforms form helps people choose safe places to build and farm.

Worked examples
Which landform? Mariam is shown a picture of tall, steep walls with stripes of rock and a thin stream at the bottom. She says: canyon, because it is deep, narrow and striped. A wide, flat area between two hills is a valley.
A gully clue. Karim finds a narrow channel in the ground with grass along the sides and smooth, gentle slopes. He says a stream made it, because plants need water and the sides are worn smooth.
If …then …
heavy rain runs through the gullythe gully gets deeper
rain runs down a bare slopeit may cut a new gully
Prediction. If it rains heavily, water will run through the gully again. Habiba predicts that it will get deeper. She also predicts that rain running down other bare slopes may cut gullies too.
Class activity

Landform cards. Make four cards: canyon, valley, mountain, dunes. On each card draw a simple side view and write two words that describe it (for example steep, wide, high, sandy). Mix the cards and let a friend describe one to you without naming it, so you can guess. Then write three questions you wonder about canyons, starting with Why, How and What.

Practice
1
Give two features of a canyon.
2
How is a valley different from a canyon?
3
A gully has plants growing along it. What does this clue suggest?
4
How long can it take for a canyon to form?
