Settling pieces and canyons
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw a jar with three layers of sediment and label them. Write which layer settled first.
Bottom: pebbles (first), middle: sand, top: fine mud (last).
2
Explain why sand on one beach may have come from somewhere far away.
Rivers, waves and wind erode sand from other places and deposit it on the beach.
3
Write a claim, one piece of evidence and a sentence of reasoning to explain why a puddle of muddy water becomes clear when it is left alone.
Claim: the mud settles. Evidence: a layer of mud lies at the bottom. Reasoning: when water is still, heavy pieces drop.
4
Make a mini-poster that shows how a canyon is different from a valley. Draw both side by side.
The canyon is deep and narrow with steep walls; the valley is wide with gentle slopes.
5
A river drops 5 scoops of sand on its bank every day. How many scoops after 6 days?
5 × 6 = 30 scoops.
