Online risks and personal information
ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 44–53
GoalName online risks and say how to keep personal information private.
New words
personal information · details that tell who you are or where to find youblock · to stop a person from contacting you or seeing your postsprivacy · keeping some things about yourself to yourself
Explanation
People talk to each other online by messages, email and chats. Most people are kind. But a few may be unkind, or may want to find out private things about you. That is why we keep personal information private. Personal information is your full name, your address, the name of your school, your phone number and your passwords. Do not share it online without asking a teacher or a family member. Be as kind and honest online as you would be in person. Make sure you know who you are talking to. If someone is unkind or makes you feel uneasy, tell an adult; an adult can block them. Think before you post any photo, because once it is shared you cannot take it back.
Worked examples
A stranger sends Omar a message: “Which school do you go to? Where do you live?” Omar does not answer. He shows the message to his father, who blocks the sender.
Habiba wants to post a photo of her cousin. She thinks before posting: “Did I ask? Am I sure this photo is fine? Could it upset someone?” She decides to ask her cousin and her mother first.
Marwan sees something that looks unsafe on a website. He does not panic. He closes the page and tells his teacher. He did the right thing and is not in trouble.
Class activity
Role play with invented names. One child plays Nour, who gets a pretend message asking for her address. The other plays her helper and says what to do: do not answer, show an adult, block. Swap roles with another message such as “Send me your photo”. Make a poster with three safe rules.
Practice
1
Name four kinds of personal information.
For example name, address, school name, phone number, password.
2

Do not answer. Tell a teacher or a family member.
3

A (the address) and C (the password). The ball is not private.
