Explanation

Visuals are anything we can see that carries information. They are written text, still pictures, animation and video. On a poster, pictures should fit your message and be clear; a picture that does not fit the topic confuses the reader. If you take a photo with a grown-up’s camera, remember three things. First, focus on the main thing in the picture. Second, check the background behind it so nothing distracting shows. Third, make sure there is enough light. Ask permission before photographing any person, and never photograph people you do not know. If you use a picture you found during research, write its source. Finally, put three facts in your poster plan, each with its source.

Worked examples

Farida wants a photo of a tree for her poster about caring for the park. She puts the tree in the middle, notices a rubbish bin behind it so she steps to the side, and takes the photo in daylight.
tap and drop✓football✗
A poster about saving water suits a picture of a tap with a drop. A picture of a football does not fit the topic.
Marwan asksmay I?permission
Marwan wants to photograph a classmate for his poster. He asks her first and asks his teacher, and only then takes the photo.
Class activity

Plan my poster. Choose a topic: keeping our street clean, saving water at home, or caring for a park. On paper write the title, three facts with the source of each, and a small sketch of the picture you will use. Check: margin, font size, three colours, source named.
