Explanation

Music is a kind of art you hear. Instruments make sound in three main ways. We blow into some, like a flute. We hit or shake some, like a drum or maracas. We pluck or rub strings on others, like a guitar or a violin. Old Egyptian paintings and carvings show people playing harps, flutes and drums, and shaking rattles. These pictures are sources that tell us about music long ago. Today in Egypt people play drums, reed flutes, a pear-shaped string instrument called the oud, and many modern instruments too. The beat is the steady pulse you can clap. Music can make you feel calm, happy or excited, and you may feel differently from your friend. When you research a musician or an artist, write who they are, what they make, one fact, and how their work makes you feel.

Beats. A clapping rhythm has 4 beats in each bar and the class claps 3 bars. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 beats.

Then and now. Long ago and today, people in Egypt play drums and flutes. Different: today there are also electric and modern instruments.
Class activity

Rhythm and feelings. Clap a pattern of 4 beats, such as clap, clap, rest, clap, and repeat it 3 times. Make a simple instrument with a grown-up: a drum from a plastic tub with a paper top, or a shaker from a closed container with rice. Test how it sounds and sort it in the three groups. Then, with a grown-up, find a musician and an artist from Egypt. Fill in a card for each and write how their work makes you feel. Do not share your own details online.
