Beaks made for food

Discover P3 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 1
GoalMatch beak shapes to the foods they suit and explain why beaks are different.
New words
beak · the hard part of a bird’s mouthscoop · to lift something up with a hollow shapeprobe · to push a long thin tip into mud or soil to find foodcrack · to break open a hard shell or seed
Explanation

A bird has no hands, so its beak does the work. Beaks have different shapes because birds eat different foods. A beak that is shaped like a spoon can scoop small animals and plants from the water. A long, thin beak works like tweezers: it can pick up tiny insects or reach into mud to find food. A short, strong beak works like a clothespin or pliers: it can hold and crack hard seeds. A hooked, sharp beak, like an eagle’s, tears meat. A wide flat beak, like a duck’s, can sift water plants and tiny animals from the water. A flamingo’s bent beak lets it filter tiny food from shallow water. A beak that is good for one kind of food is usually not good for another. This is an adaptation.

Class activity

Beak matching game. Look at pictures of birds in a book or online with a grown-up. For each bird, look carefully at its beak and guess what it eats. Draw four beaks (spoon, thin, short and strong, hooked) on paper and write a food beside each. Then tell a partner why a spoon beak could not crack a hard seed.
