Healthy or unhealthy?
Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 2
GoalDecide which everyday choices are healthy and which are unhealthy, and choose three good choices for my week.
New words
healthy · good for your body and your mindunhealthy · not good for your body or mind if you do it too much or too oftenchoice · picking one thing from two or moreenergy · the power that lets our bodies move, think and grow
Explanation
Every day we make choices. After school, Hana feels tired. She can drink water or a very sweet fizzy drink. She can eat an orange or a packet of biscuits. She can sit in front of a screen or run in the courtyard. Water, fruit and running are healthy choices. They help the body feel good and give it energy. Sweet drinks and sweet snacks now and then will not hurt us, but if we choose them every day, they are not good for our bodies. Hours in front of a screen also take away time for moving and sleeping. A healthy choice is not about being perfect. It is about choosing the better option more often.
Worked examples
Youssef gets home hot and sweaty after football. He drinks a glass of water and eats a banana. His body feels better and he has energy to do his homework.
Jana plays a video game for four hours and forgets to eat lunch. She feels grumpy and tired. A better choice would be one hour of the game, then a meal and a walk.
Healthy
Unhealthy
Playing outside
Skipping breakfast
Eating vegetables
Sweets instead of lunch
Drinking water
Arguing all the time
The class sorts activities. Playing outside, eating vegetables and drinking water go in “healthy”. Skipping breakfast and eating sweets instead of lunch go in “unhealthy”.
Class activity
Three good choices. Think about your week. Write three healthy choices you will make, for example “I will drink water at break”, “I will play outside for a while after homework”, and “I will eat a fruit every day”. Draw one picture of how you will feel. Share it with a partner.
Practice
1
Is drinking water during the day healthy or unhealthy?
Healthy.
2
Skipping breakfast every morning: healthy or unhealthy? Why?
Unhealthy. The body needs fuel in the morning to learn and play.
3
Which picture shows a healthy choice after school? Say the letter.
A, the apple.
4
Write one healthy choice you can make tomorrow.
Any sensible answer is fine, for example: I will play outside for a while.
