Stopping floods: helpers and leaders

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 3
GoalDescribe how dams, sandbags and canals help prevent floods, name jobs that help a community, and list the traits of a good leader.
New words
dam · a strong wall built across a river or canal to hold water backsandbag · a strong bag filled with sand, piled up to guard against watercanal · a channel that carries water from one place to anotherleader · a person who helps a group work together
Explanation

People have ways to reduce floods. A dam is a strong wall built across a river or canal. It holds water back, and once the rain has passed it releases the water bit by bit, so there is no sudden flood. A dam also changes how a river flows, with gains and losses for people and nature. Sandbags are strong bags filled with sand. People pile them in front of doors and along the edge of land. Flood water cannot easily soak through the pile and is steered around it. Canals are channels that carry water. In heavy rain, extra water can be sent along canals away from houses and streets, to the sea or to a safe place where it can soak into the ground. Keeping drains and canals free of rubbish lets the water flow. Many jobs help a community in a flood: engineers plan canals and drains, workers keep the drains clear, doctors and nurses care for people, police officers and firefighters help people reach safety, and volunteers help everyone. A good leader helps people work together. A good leader is calm, brave, responsible, caring and fair, and listens to others. A good leader is not bossy, selfish or unkind.

MethodWhat it does
damholds water back and lets it out slowly
sandbagsa pile that steers water around a building
canalcarries extra water away
Worked examples
A sandbag wall. A shop door needs a wall of sandbags 3 bags wide and 4 bags high. In the picture each square is one bag. 3 × 4 = 12 bags. If each volunteer carries 3 bags, 12 ÷ 3 = 4 volunteers carry them all at once.

Class activity

Match and lead. First, make a chart with three rows: dam, sandbags and canal. Write what each one does and one good thing about it. Then, in a group, plan a pretend flood-safety day for your street. Give each child a job from the lesson. Choose a leader by ballot, and write two sentences about why a leader needs to be calm, fair and a good listener.

How do sandbags help in a flood?
3
How many sandbags are in the wall? Each square is one bag.
