GoalUse clues and a strategy to solve picture clues, number riddles and a measuring riddle.
New words
clue · a small fact that helps you find an answerriddle · a puzzle where you use clues to find the answerstrategy · a way of working that helps you solve a problemcritical thinking · thinking carefully about clues and checking my answer
Explanation
Critical thinking means thinking carefully before you decide. A clue is a small part of the answer. When you see only a small part of a picture, such as feathers and a beak, you can guess the whole: a bird. Always say what helped you decide. In a number riddle, you use each clue in turn. Strategies help: guess and check, skip count, draw it, or cross out answers that cannot be right. Try this riddle: “My number is less than 10. If you add my number 4 times you get 24.” Skip count by 6: 6, 12, 18, 24. That is 4 jumps, so the number is 6. Last, check: 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24, so it is correct.

Worked examples
Clues: it has wings, feathers and a beak. Nour decides it is a bird. What helped her? The feathers and the beak: only birds have both.
Riddle: “My number is less than 10. Add it 3 times to make 21.” Marwan skip counts by 7: 7, 14, 21. That is 3 jumps. The number is 7, and 7 + 7 + 7 = 21.
Riddle: “I am a unit for length. I am good for measuring a pencil. There are 100 of me in one metre.” The answer is a centimetre. Habiba crossed out litre and kilogram, because they do not measure length.
Class activity
Riddle time. In pairs, make a number riddle for your partner. Choose the answer first (for example 8), then write two clues: “less than 10” and “add me 3 times to make 24”. Your partner must say the answer and tell the strategy used.
Practice
1
My number is less than 10. Add it 5 times to make 40. What is my number?
8, because 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 40.
2
I am more than 20 and less than 30. You say me when you count in 5s. What number am I?
25.
3
The pencil is next to the ruler. How long is it in centimetres?
6 cm.
4
Clues: it has four legs, a tail and says “meow”. Which animal is it, and which clue is the best?
