Changing shape
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Find three things at home that you can squash and three that you cannot. Tell a grown-up what is different about them.
For example: squash a sponge, a pillow, dough; cannot squash a spoon, a coin, a brick. Soft things change shape, hard things do not.
2
Show a grown-up how to stretch something and how to bend something. Name each object.
For example: stretch a sock or a rubber band; bend a paper strip. Check they pull to stretch and push the ends together to bend.
3
Draw a rope being twisted. Draw arrows on the two ends to show which way your hands turn.
The two arrows on the ends should point in different ways (for example one turning clockwise, the other turning the opposite way).
4
Press a cushion or a pillow with one hand, then with both hands. When is it flatter? What happens when you let go? Tell a grown-up.
It is flatter with the bigger push (both hands). When you let go, it springs back towards its shape.
