Comparing animals
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Choose two animals you know, for example a cow and a hen. Tell a grown-up two ways they are the same and two ways they are different.
For example: both live on farms and have legs; the cow has four legs and hair, and gives milk; the hen has two legs, feathers and wings, and lays eggs.
2
Draw five animals. Write how many legs each one has.
Check the counts, for example: bird 2, cat 4, ant 6, spider 8, fish 0.
3
Look for minibeasts in a garden or park with an adult, or at pictures in a book. Tally how many have six legs, eight legs and no legs. Put them back and wash your hands.
Check that the tally marks are in groups of five and the totals are counted correctly.
4
Draw a block graph with three columns: animals with fur, feathers and scales. Put three or more animals in each column.
For example: fur: cat, dog, rabbit; feathers: hen, owl, duck; scales: fish, snake, lizard. Check the blocks match the animals.
