Guidelines for doing a project

Textbook: p. 26
GoalKnow the stages of a project (plan, division of tasks, calculation, report, defence) and plan a simple project with geometric calculations.

Explanation

A project is done individually or in a group of 3–4. First the task is analysed, a goal is set and tasks are shared out. Then data (measurements, prices) are collected, geometric calculations are made, several options are compared and the best one is justified. Finally a report and a presentation are prepared and the project is defended. A project can be practical (a real-life problem), theoretical (a deeper study of a topic) or research-based. The calculations may use area, perimeter, the Pythagorean theorem and percentages.

Worked examples
A room is 5 m wide, 4 m long and 3 m high. The wall area is 2·(5 + 4)·3 = 54 m². If the door and window total 6 m², the area to paint is 54 − 6 = 48 m².
If 1 litre of paint covers 8 m² in one coat, two coats need 48 · 2 : 8 = 12 litres. Compare the prices of the options and choose the cheaper one.
Class activity

“Mini project”: in groups plan the redecoration of the classroom: take measurements, calculate the wall area and present the plan in 2 minutes.

Practice
1
A wall is 6 m long and 3 m high. What is its area (m²)?
2
One litre of paint covers 9 m². How many litres are needed for 54 m²?
3
List the stages of a project in order.
4
Why should several options be compared?
