Explanation

When a gas expands it does work against the external pressure force; this is called thermodynamic work. For piston area S and displacement Δh, A = F·Δh = pS·Δh = pΔV, i.e. in isobaric expansion the work equals pressure times the change of volume. From the equation of state pΔV = νRΔT, so A = νRΔT; for 1 mol A = RΔT. Thus R is numerically equal to the work done when 1 mol of gas is heated by 1 K at constant pressure. When the gas expands A > 0; when external forces compress it, the gas’s work is A < 0. On a p–V graph the isobaric work equals the area of a rectangle; for an isothermal process it equals the area under the isotherm. In an isochoric process ΔV = 0, so the work is zero.

Worked examples
At p = 100 kPa a gas expands from 2 l to 5 l: A = pΔV = 100 000 Pa · 0.003 m³ = 300 J.
2 mol of gas is heated isobarically by 50 K: A = νRΔT = 2·8.31·50 = 831 J.
Class activity

Draw a p–V plane on the board. Groups show an isobaric expansion as a rectangle and link its area to the work done. On squared paper, estimate the work by counting squares (each square = 10 J).

Practice
1
Write the formula for the work done by a gas expanding at constant pressure.
2
At p = 200 kPa a gas expands by 4 l. How many joules of work does it do?
3
During isobaric heating by 20 K a gas did 831 J of work. What is the amount of substance in mol?
4
Why does a gas do no work in an isochoric process, and where does the energy go if it is heated?
