Explanation
In a problem convert distances to metres and set signs correctly: for a converging lens F > 0, for a real image f > 0, for a virtual image f < 0; for a diverging lens F < 0. The basic relations are 1/F = 1/d + 1/f, Γ = f/d, D = 1/F. Combining them gives f = dF/(d – F) and Γ = F/(d – F). In a camera problem the image forms close to the focal plane: Γ = h/H (h – image, H – object height), so d = F(1 + Γ)/Γ; for a distant object d ≈ F·H/h. For a virtual image put f negative and read the lens type from the sign of F. If the image is enlarged, |Γ| > 1. Check that the answer makes sense: for d > 2F the image must be reduced.
Worked examples
F = 15 cm, d = 45 cm: f = dF/(d – F) = 45·15/30 = 22.5 cm; Γ = 22.5/45 = 0.5.
A camera (F = 5 cm) photographs a person 2 m tall standing 10 m away: f = dF/(d – F) = 10·0.05/9.95 ≈ 0.050 m; image height h = H·f/d ≈ 2·0.050/10 = 0.010 m = 1 cm. For a distant object f ≈ F.
Class activity
Calculation task: a phone camera has a focal length of about 5 mm. If your height is 1.6 m and your image in the photo is 4 mm tall, how far from the camera are you? Check the result by measuring in a room.
Practice
1
F = 20 cm, d = 30 cm. Find f.

2
An object 10 cm from a converging lens has a virtual image five times its size. What is the optical power in dptr?
f = –5·10 = –50 cm; D = 1/0.1 – 1/0.5 = 10 – 2 = 8 dptr
3
Why is f taken as negative for a virtual image?
The image lies on the same side of the lens as the object; the continuations of the rays meet.
4
What image does a lens give at d = 2F and what is Γ?
