Explanation

In a camera problem use Γ = h/H and d = F(1 + Γ)/Γ, with distances in metres. For a magnifier K = D₀/F, D₀ = 25 cm = 0.25 m. For a microscope K ≈ l·D₀/(F₁F₂) (all in the same unit, usually centimetres). In a spectacles problem the unaided eye sees best at a distance a, while with spectacles an object must be seen at the normal distance d₀ = 25 cm. The spectacle lens must form a virtual image at distance a of a point at distance d₀ from it, so D = 1/d₀ – 1/a. For short-sightedness a < d₀ and D < 0 (concave lens); for long-sightedness a > d₀ and D > 0 (convex lens). Finally check the sign of D against the type of spectacles.

Worked examples
A camera with F = 8 cm gives an image 12 mm tall of a person 1.8 m tall: Γ = 0.012/1.8 = 1/150; d = 0.08·(151/150)·150 ≈ 12 m.
For a person who reads from 10 cm without spectacles: D = 1/0.25 – 1/0.10 = 4 – 10 = –6 dptr (concave lens).
Class activity

For a microscope take F₁ = 0.4 cm, F₂ = 5 cm, l = 16 cm. Calculate K (D₀ = 25 cm) and compare it with the markings (×40, ×100, ×400) of a school-lab microscope. Use the microscope as the teacher shows; never point its mirror at the Sun.

Practice
1
A magnifier magnifies 6.25 times. What is its focal length in cm (D₀ = 25 cm)?
2
Microscope: F₁ = 0.5 cm, F₂ = 4 cm, l = 18 cm. Find K (D₀ = 25 cm).
3
A person can read without spectacles only from 1/6 m ≈ 16.7 cm. What spectacle power is needed? (d₀ = 25 cm)
4
Why is D negative for short-sightedness and positive for long-sightedness?
