Achievements of Uzbek scientists in biology and selection
According to the textbook, scholars such as Abu Rayhan Beruni (plants, medicinal substances), Abu Ali ibn Sino (medicine) and Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur (descriptions of plants and animals) contributed to the development of biology. Modern scientists have worked in many fields: botany — Q. Zokirov, A. Muzaffarov; zoology — T. Zokhidov, A. Muhammadiyev, J. Azimov; biochemistry and endocrinology — Yo. Turakulov, B. Tashmukhamedov; genetics — J. Musayev, A. Abdukarimov; genetic engineering and biotechnology — I. Abdurakhmonov and others; flora and geobotany — K. Tojiboyev, O‘. Allanazarova. In cotton selection S. Mirakhmedov used a wild-cotton gene to create the wilt-resistant “Tashkent-1, -2, -3” varieties, and N. Nazirov and O. Jalilov created “AN-402”, “Samarkand-3” and “Yulduz”; the textbook notes that I. Abdurakhmonov’s group created the “Porloq” varieties using genetic engineering methods. The wheat varieties “Ulugbek-600” and “Sanzor”, grape (“Rizamat”), apple (“Namangan olmasi”), peach and potato varieties and the Karabair horse breed are also products of Uzbek breeders and folk selection. In microbiology the work of A. Muzaffarov (the alga Chlorella and cleaning of water bodies) and M. Mavloniy (yeast technology) is mentioned.
“Scientist card”. Choose one scientist or variety (for example “Tashkent-1” or the Karabair horse) and make a card: field, what was created, why it matters. Use the textbook and the library and check the facts.
