Properties and levels of organisation of life
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Compare a living organism and a machine on three properties (e.g. energy source, self-renewal, growth).
A machine burns fuel, cannot reproduce and does not grow; an organism gets energy from food, reproduces, grows and renews itself.
2
Give one example of your own for each level of organisation of life.
For example: an ATP molecule; a skin cell; a cat; a population of a desert plant in the Kyzylkum; the Zaamin mountain forest; Earth’s biosphere.
3
Why do plants also move although we do not notice it?
Plant movements (bending toward light, flowers opening) are very slow and happen through growth.
4
Why are heredity and variation both necessary?
Heredity preserves the traits of a species, while variation allows new traits to appear and evolution to happen.
5
What process takes place at the biosphere level?
The cycling of matter and the flow of energy (from the Sun along food chains), driven by the activity of living organisms.
