Explanation
A segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is called its midline. Every triangle has three midlines. Theorem: the midline of a triangle is parallel to the third side and equals half of it. In the proof we extend the midline by its own length and obtain a parallelogram. Consequence: the triangle whose vertices are the midpoints of the sides has half the perimeter of the original triangle. If we join the midpoints of the sides of a convex quadrilateral in order, we get a parallelogram.
Worked examples
The sides of a triangle are 14, 18 and 22 cm. Its midlines are 7, 9 and 11 cm.
A triangle has perimeter 48 cm. The triangle formed by the midpoints of its sides has perimeter 48 : 2 = 24 cm.
Class activity
“Join the midpoints”: draw a triangle, find the midpoints of its sides and join them; compare the four small triangles.
Practice
1
One side of a triangle is 26 cm. How long is the midline parallel to it (cm)?

2
A midline of a triangle is 9 cm. How long is the side parallel to it (cm)?
18
3
The perimeter of a triangle is 70 cm. What is the perimeter of the triangle joining the midpoints of its sides (cm)?

4
Why is a midline parallel to the third side?
Extending the midline by its own length gives a parallelogram, and opposite sides of a parallelogram are parallel.
