Explanation
Let a line l and a point A be given in the plane. Draw the perpendicular AB from A to l and extend it beyond B by a segment BA1 equal to AB; then A1 is the point symmetric to A about l, and l is the axis of symmetry. A point on the axis is regarded as symmetric to itself. If every point of a figure F1 is symmetric about l to a point of F, the figures F and F1 are symmetric about l, and they are congruent. Theorem: under reflection in an axis the distances between points of a figure are preserved. In coordinates: about the Ox axis the point (x; y) goes to (x; −y), and about the Oy axis it goes to (−x; y).
Worked examples
The reflection of A(3; 4) in the Ox axis is A1(3; −4). A is 4 units above the axis and A1 is 4 units below, so AA1 = 8 units.
The reflection of B(−2; 5) in the Oy axis is B1(2; 5): the ordinate stays, the abscissa changes sign.
Class activity
“Mirror”: draw a line in your notebook, draw a triangle on one side and construct its mirror image on the other (use the grid and a set square).
Practice
1
What is the reflection of A(5; −3) in the Ox axis?
(5; 3)
2
What is the reflection of B(−4; 6) in the Oy axis?
(4; 6)
3
A point is 7 cm from the line l. How far is it from its mirror image (cm)?
14
4
Why is a point on the axis symmetric to itself?
Its distance to the axis is 0, so its image is the point itself.
