Measuring angles formed by lines meeting a circle
Textbook: pp. 124–125
GoalKnow how to measure angles formed by tangents, chords and secants through arcs.

Explanation
1) The angle between a tangent and a chord from the point of tangency equals half the arc lying inside the angle. 2) The angle formed by two chords that intersect inside a circle equals half the sum of the arcs subtended by that angle and its vertical angle. 3) The angle between two secants from a point outside the circle equals half the difference of the arcs between them. 4) The angle between two tangents from an outside point equals 180° minus the smaller arc between the points of tangency. To prove the first theorem, draw a chord parallel to the tangent and use alternate angles and the inscribed angle. The others follow from the exterior angle property and the inscribed angle theorem.
Worked examples
Two chords meet and the arcs are 70° and 110°: the angle is (70° + 110°) : 2 = 90°. A tangent–chord angle whose arc is 100° is 50°.
Two secants with arcs 150° and 40°: the angle is (150° − 40°) : 2 = 55°. Two tangents with smaller arc 120°: the angle is 180° − 120° = 60°.
Class activity
“Angle and arc”: draw a chord and a tangent on a circle, measure the tangent–chord angle and its arc, and check that the angle is half the arc.
Practice
1
A tangent–chord angle contains an arc of 140°. How many degrees is the angle?
70
2
Two chords intersect inside a circle and the arcs are 50° and 90°. How many degrees is the angle?
70
3
Two secants are drawn from an outside point and the arcs are 130° and 30°. How many degrees is the angle between them?
50
4
Why is a tangent–chord angle equal to half the arc?
Draw a chord parallel to the tangent: the alternate angle equals an inscribed angle, which is half the arc.
