Area of a rhombus
Textbook: pp. 82–83
GoalKnow how to find the area of a rhombus from a side and altitude, and from its diagonals.
New words
rhombus · rombdiagonals · diagonallaraltitude · balandlikarea · yuz
Explanation
A rhombus is a parallelogram, so its area is S = a · h, where a is a side and h is the altitude drawn to it. The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular and bisect each other at their intersection point, so the rhombus splits into four congruent right triangles. The legs of each triangle are d₁ : 2 and d₂ : 2, so the four triangles have total area 4 · (d₁/2 · d₂/2 : 2) = d₁ · d₂ : 2. Hence S = d₁ · d₂ : 2: the area of a rhombus is half the product of its diagonals. Choose one of the two formulas according to which quantities the problem gives.
Worked examples
The diagonals of a rhombus are 16 cm and 30 cm. Its area is 16 · 30 : 2 = 240 cm².
A rhombus has side 10 cm and altitude 6 cm to it. Its area is 10 · 6 = 60 cm².
Class activity
“Four triangles”: draw a rhombus on squared paper (or cut one out with an adult’s help), split it along its diagonals and check that the four triangles are congruent.
Practice
1
The diagonals of a rhombus are 14 cm and 9 cm. What is its area (cm²)?
63
2
A rhombus has side 12 cm and altitude 7 cm. What is its area (cm²)?
84
3
A rhombus has area 96 cm² and one diagonal 12 cm. How long is the other diagonal (cm)?
16
4
Why do the diagonals split a rhombus into four congruent triangles?
The diagonals are perpendicular and bisect each other, so the right triangles formed have equal corresponding legs.
