Explanation

An expression joined by plus and minus signs is called an algebraic sum, and it can also be written as a sum: 5 - 9 + 4 = 5 + (-9) + 4. If a plus sign stands before a bracket, we drop the bracket and keep the sign of every term inside: a + (b - c) = a + b - c. If a minus sign stands before a bracket, the sign of every term inside is reversed: a - (b - c) = a - b + c. With nested brackets we open them from the inside outwards. Conversely, when enclosing terms in brackets, a plus before the bracket keeps the signs, and a minus reverses all of them: a - b - c = a - (b + c).

Worked examples
30 - (12 - 5 + 4) = 30 - 12 + 5 - 4 = 19.
5x + (3x - (2x + 7)) = 5x + 3x - 2x - 7 = 6x - 7. The inner bracket is opened first, then the outer one.
Class activity

“Sign guard”: one pupil places a + or - card before a bracket, a second writes the terms inside with their new signs, and a third checks them and claps if they are correct.

Practice
1
Compute 90 - (47 - 7 + 10) by opening the brackets.
2
Open the brackets in 5a - (2a - 3b + 1) and simplify.
3
In m - n + p - q, enclose n, p, q in brackets preceded by a minus sign.
4
Why is a - (b + c) = a - b - c?
