Bar charts
Textbook: Part 1, lesson 30, pp. 93–95
GoalRead and build a bar chart.

Explanation
In a bar chart each value is shown by one bar: the taller the bar, the greater the value. To build a chart we draw the axes, choose a scale (what one division stands for), draw bars of equal width and label them. From a chart we can find the greatest and least value, differences, totals and the mean.
Worked examples
Five children scored 8, 5, 7, 10 and 5 goals in a football season. The most is 10. The total is 8 + 5 + 7 + 10 + 5 = 35 and the mean is 35 : 5 = 7 goals.
If one division is 2 goals, a bar reaching the 4th line shows 2 × 4 = 8 goals.
Class activity
“Class chart”: children collect class data (birth months or shoe sizes) and draw a bar chart in their notebooks.
