Reading and writing multi-digit numbers
Textbook: Part 1, lesson 12, pp. 37–39
GoalRead and write multi-digit numbers up to millions.
New words
million · millionclass name · sinf nomidigit that is not read · o‘qilmaydigan raqamtable · jadval
Explanation
When reading a number we say the name of each class: millions, thousands. The ones class name is not said. Inside a class we say the place values too. A 0 in a place is not read. If all three places of a class are 0, the class name is not said.
Worked examples
23 456 789 – twenty-three million four hundred fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty-nine.
46 000 512 – forty-six million five hundred twelve (the thousands class is all zeros, so “thousand” is not said).
Class activity
“Read the number”: children hold cards with 5–8 digit numbers. They take turns reading, showing the classes with hand gestures.
