Explanation

To add two multi-digit numbers, write them in a column: ones under ones, tens under tens and so on. Start from the right. If the total in a place is 10 or more, write its ones in that place and carry the ten to the next place.

Worked examples
41 523 + 26 304 = 67 827 (no carrying needed).
475 867 + 268 495: 7 + 5 = 12 (write 2, carry 1); 6 + 9 + 1 = 16 (6, carry 1); 8 + 4 + 1 = 13 (3, carry 1); 5 + 8 + 1 = 14 (4, carry 1); 7 + 6 + 1 = 14 (4, carry 1); 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. Answer: 744 362.
Class activity

“Digits in place”: on squared paper children write two numbers in a column. A neighbour checks the places are aligned, then they add together.
