Dividing numbers that end in zero
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 50, pp. 34–36
GoalDivide numbers ending in zeros by a one-digit number: move the zeros to the quotient.
New words
number ending in zero · 0 bilan tugagan sonhundred · yuzlikthousand · mingquotient · bo‘linma
Explanation
If the dividend ends in zeros, first divide the other digits. When the remainder is 0, write the remaining zeros in the quotient. 4 800 : 4 = 1 200, because 48 hundreds : 4 = 12 hundreds. This lets us calculate quickly without a long written method.
Worked examples
1 560 : 3 = 520, because 156 tens : 3 = 52 tens.
372 000 : 6 = 62 000, because 372 thousands : 6 = 62 thousands.
Class activity
“Moving zeros”: the teacher gives an example ending in zeros. Children divide in place units (hundreds, thousands), give the quotient and show where the zeros moved.
