Long division (continued)
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 45, pp. 19–21
GoalUse the long-division algorithm with an incomplete dividend.
New words
incomplete dividend · to‘liqsiz bo‘linuvchiplace unit · xona birligibringing down · pastga tushirishremainder · qoldiq
Explanation
756 : 4. 1) Look at the hundreds: 7 hundreds can be divided by 4, so 7 is the incomplete dividend. 2) 7 : 4 = 1 (remainder 3). 3) Bring the next digit down next to the remainder: 35 : 4 = 8 (remainder 3). 4) Bring down again: 36 : 4 = 9. The quotient is 189. Repeat these steps until no digits are left.
Worked examples
845 : 5: 8 : 5 = 1 (3 left), 34 : 5 = 6 (4 left), 45 : 5 = 9. The quotient is 169.
Check: 169 × 5 = 845.
Class activity
“Algorithm chain”: the class stands in a chain. Each child says one step (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) while the example on the board is solved in that order.
