Dividing multi-digit numbers with a remainder
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 48, pp. 28–30
GoalDivide multi-digit numbers with a remainder and find the remainder.
New words
division with remainder · qoldiqli bo‘lishexact division · butun bo‘linishdivisor · bo‘luvchiquarter of a year · yil choragi (kvartal)
Explanation
When long division is finished, the last subtraction gives the remainder. If it is 0, the division is exact. 47 213 : 4 = 11 803 (remainder 1), because 4 × 11 803 = 47 212 and 47 213 − 47 212 = 1. Dividing by 10 the remainder can be 0 to 9, and dividing by 1 it is always 0. Remember: 1 year = 4 quarters, 1 quarter = 3 months.
Worked examples
25 678 : 10 = 2 567 (remainder 8).
342 615 : 5 = 68 523 with no remainder, because the number ends in 5.
Class activity
“Remainder box”: the teacher names a divisor (for example 7). Children write all possible remainders (0 to 6) on cards and show them.
