Solving word problems with division
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 47, pp. 25–27
GoalSolve word problems that use division by writing an expression.
New words
problem · masalaexpression · ifodatimes fewer · marta kamsharing equally · teng bo‘lish
Explanation
To solve a problem, first read it and decide what is given and what is asked. If things are shared equally or it says “so many times fewer”, we use division. Then we write an expression, calculate and write the answer with its unit. Sometimes a problem needs two steps.
Worked examples
If each shirt needs 3 m, then 1 200 m of cloth makes 1 200 : 3 = 400 shirts.
A large tank has 960 l of water, which is 4 times more than the small tank. The small tank has 960 : 4 = 240 l.
Class activity
“Problem workshop”: groups invent a problem solved by division, and another group solves it with an expression.
