Dividing numbers with a zero in the middle
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 49, pp. 31–33
GoalDividing numbers with a zero in the middle: writing 0 in the quotient.
New words
zero · nolincomplete dividend · to‘liqsiz bo‘linuvchiquotient · bo‘linmadigit · raqam
Explanation
After bringing a digit down, if the incomplete dividend is still smaller than the divisor, we write 0 in the quotient and bring down the next digit. 4 096 : 4: 4 : 4 = 1; the 0 in the hundreds place cannot be divided by 4, so we write 0 in the quotient; then 9 : 4 = 2 (remainder 1); 16 : 4 = 4. The quotient is 1 024.
Worked examples
6 306 : 3: 6 : 3 = 2, 3 : 3 = 1, 0 : 3 = 0, 6 : 3 = 2. The quotient is 2 102.
3 015 : 5: 30 : 5 = 6, 1 : 5 = 0 (we write zero), 15 : 5 = 3. The quotient is 603.
Class activity
“Where is the zero hiding?”: the teacher leaves a digit out of some quotients. Children check and find where the 0 must be.
