Explanation
In 25 + 6 the ones add up to 11. 2 tens 5 ones + 6 ones = 2 tens 11 ones. 11 ones = 1 ten 1 one, so we get 3 tens 1 one = 31.
Worked examples
23 + 9: 2 tens 3 ones + 9 ones = 2 tens 12 ones = 3 tens 2 ones = 32.
47 + 8 = 4 tens 15 ones = 5 tens 5 ones = 55.
Class activity
“Moving house”: two “houses” (tens and ones) are drawn. When there are 10 or more ones they are bundled and moved to the tens house.
