Explanation
We calculate 30 − 7 like this: 30 = 20 + 10. First 10 − 7 = 3. Then add it to 20: 20 + 3 = 23. There are 7 days in a week.
Worked examples
60 − 1 = 50 + (10 − 1) = 50 + 9 = 59.
30 − 9 = 20 + (10 − 9) = 21; 80 − 3 = 77.
Class activity
“With the calendar”: choose a date on the class calendar. Children find the date a week earlier and a week later (subtract and add 7).
