Explanation

A simple problem is solved with one operation; a compound problem needs two or more. First read the story, decide what we know and what we must find, then make a plan. For example: of 76 workers, 29 are men. The women are 76 − 29 = 47. There are 47 − 29 = 18 more women than men.

Worked examples
Of 58 volunteers, 9 work inside. The other 49 split into groups of 7: 49 : 7 = 7 groups.
3 monitors for each of 9 stations: 9 × 3 = 27 monitors.
Class activity

“Problem doctors”: each group gets one compound problem. They split it into two simple problems, write “question 1” and “question 2”, then solve.

Practice
1

2
58 volunteers came to a concert hall. 9 worked inside and the rest were split into groups of 7. How many groups were there?
