Explanation
1 × 4 means 1 taken 4 times: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4. 4 × 1 is 4 taken once: it is not a real sum, just 4. On a number line, if every step is 1, after a steps we reach a. If each person gets one, we need 1 × (number of people).
Worked examples
Diyor has 7 friends and buys 1 carton of juice for each: 1 × 7 = 7 cartons.
Malika prepared 2 sweets for each of 5 friends: 2 × 5 = 10.
Class activity
