Hours and minutes
Textbook: Part 2, lesson 69, pp. 60–61
GoalHours and minutes: 1 hour = 60 minutes; telling time on a clock face.
New words
hour; clock · soatminute · minuthour hand · soat miliminute hand · minut mili
Explanation
On a clock the short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand. The minute hand goes all the way round in 60 minutes, and in that time the hour hand moves one mark: 1 hour = 60 minutes. We count minutes in fives: at 1 – 5, at 2 – 10, at 4 – 20. “20 minutes past 6” is written 6 h 20 min or 6:20.
Worked examples
The hour hand is between 9 and 10 and the minute hand is on 7: the time is 9:35 (in fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35).
A dandelion opens at 6 and closes at 17: 17 − 6 = 11 hours open.
Class activity
“Make a clock”: each child makes a cardboard clock. The teacher says a time (3:15, 8:30, 11:45) and children set the hands. Then swap roles.
