Explanation

A three-digit number has three digits, a two-digit number has two, a one-digit number has one. Any three-digit number is greater than any two-digit or one-digit number. For example, 301 > 9 and 100 > 99. If the numbers have the same count of digits, compare place by place as usual: 450 > 405.

Worked examples
34 and 170: 34 has two digits, 170 has three. 34 < 170.
89 and 103: 89 < 103 because 103 is a three-digit number.
Class activity

“Number line-up”: three children hold cards with a three-digit, a two-digit and a one-digit number. They line up from smallest to greatest and explain why.
