The volume of a prism

Textbook, Part 1: pp. 161–171
GoalUnderstand the notion of volume and its properties and use the formulas for the volume of a cuboid, a parallelepiped and any prism, V = S · h, to solve problems.

Explanation

Volume is a number measuring how much space a solid takes: every solid has a positive volume, equal solids have equal volumes, if a solid is cut into pieces its volume is the sum of the pieces’ volumes, and the unit cube of edge 1 has volume 1. Units: 1 m³ = 1000 dm³ = 1,000,000 cm³, and 1 dm³ = 1 litre. The volume of a cuboid is V = a · b · c, hence V = S_base · h. It is proved that for every parallelepiped and every prism V = S_base · h: a right triangular prism is doubled to a cuboid, any right prism is handled by splitting its base into triangles, and an oblique prism has the same volume as the right prism with the same base and height (the height is the perpendicular distance between the bases, h = l · sin α, where l is the lateral edge and α its angle with the base). Solids with equal volumes are called equivalent; they need not be congruent. In problems find the base area first and then the height.

Worked examples
A right prism has a right-triangle base with legs 6 and 8 and height 15. S_base = (1/2) · 6 · 8 = 24, V = 24 · 15 = 360. An oblique prism has a square base of side 4 and a lateral edge 10 inclined at 30° to the base: h = 10 · sin 30° = 5, V = 16 · 5 = 80.
An aquarium 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm: V = 60,000 cm³ = 60 dm³ = 60 litres. A cube equivalent to a cuboid 1 × 5 × 25: V = 125, so the edge is ∛125 = 5. They are equivalent but not congruent.
Class activity

“Litres”: with boxes, containers and water (supervised by an adult), check that an empty 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm box holds exactly 1 litre. Then compute the volume of another container from its dimensions and check it with water.

Practice
1
A right prism has a trapezoid base (bases 7 and 13, height 5) and prism height 20. Find its volume.
2
A cuboid with a square base has volume 98 cm³ and height 2 cm. How many centimetres is the side of the base?
3
A cube has volume 343 cm³. What is its edge?
4
Why do an oblique and a right prism with the same base and height have equal volumes?
