International law
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write five of the eight principles of international law and give a real-life example of one.
For example: non-use of force, peaceful settlement, non-interference, inviolability of borders, respect for human rights. Example: a border dispute is settled by negotiation or a court.
2
Write two differences between an international treaty and a domestic law.
A treaty is made by states through agreement, a law is adopted by a national parliament; a treaty depends on the parties’ consent, a law has general force inside the territory.
3
Explain the difference between the continental and common-law families in 3–4 sentences.
In the continental family the main source is statutes and codes, which judges apply. In common law, court decisions (precedents) also make rules. Today each borrows from the other. Uzbekistan is closer to the continental family.
4
Invent your own example for each of “public international law” and “private international law”.
Public: a transport agreement between two states. Private: a rental contract with a foreign student or an international online purchase.
5
Why does it matter that even a strong state respects international law? Support your view in 4–5 sentences.
Without rules, security and trade become uncertain; the same rules for all create trust; a state that breaks them faces loss of reputation and sanctions; and it expects the same of others.
